These face masks are subjected to Particle, Bacterial, and Viral Filtration Efficiency (PFE/BFE/VFE) tests.
Tested by KAKEN TEST CENTER of Japan, these product safety approbations were performed on face masks and devices, that are designed to provide protection against biological aerosols.
This test is used for FDA 510(k) submissions for surgical masks. And it is also required by ASTM F2100 and EN14683. Passing this test is deemed to comply with ASTM F2101 and EN14683. The Applicable Standards are ASTM F2100, EN 14683, and ASTM F2101.
Particle Filtration Efficiency ( PFE )
The Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) test evaluates the nonviable particle retention or filtration efficiency of these face masks at sub-micron levels. This test is performed on these face masks with a constant flow rate of 28.3 litres per minute (LPM) or 1 cubic foot per minute (CFM) passing through it.
Also referred to as Latex Particle Challenge, this test is required for ASTM F2100 and is performed according to the ASTM F2100 and follows the basic principle of ASTM F2299. Kaken Test Center, in Japan, offers a high level of expertise in PFE testing and is one of the leading companies to offer this test and can perform all ASTM F2100 testing needed.
In Particle Filtration Efficiency testing, the filtration efficiency of these face masks against sub-micron particles cannot be determined using viable challenge particles. This procedure involves the generation of a particle aerosol using JSR-Size Standard Particles SC-0100-D Spherical Polystyrene Standard Particles with a particle generator. The particles are counted with a laser particle counter.
The latex particles used in this procedure have a narrow standard deviation and the design of the particle generator produces a consistent particle challenge. Testing is conducted at a single particle size of 0.1µm (0.100 ± 0.003 µm). ASTM F2100 specifies a challenge particle size of 0.1µm. The particle counter is an optical laser based device and operates at a flow rate of 1 cubic foot per minute (CFM) or 28.3 liters per minute (LPM).

Bacterial Filtration Efficiency ( BFE )
The Bacterial Filtration Efficiency test determines the filtration efficiency by comparing the bacterial control counts to test article effluent counts. The test is conducted using Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ( ATCC® 6538TM ) as the challenge organism. After the filtration media is preconditioned, a liquid suspension of S. aureus is aerosolized and delivered to the filtration media at a constant flow rate of 28.3 litres per minute (LPM) or 1 cubic foot per minute (CFM).
The aerosol droplets are drawn through a six-stage Andersen sampler for collection. The number of bacterial aerosol droplets contacting the filter media is determined by conducting challenge controls without filter medium in the test system. Challenge controls are maintained at 1,700 – 3,000 colony-forming units (CFU) with a mean particle size (MPS) of 3.0 ± 0.3 µm. This allows filtration efficiencies to be reported up to >99.9%.
The BFE test offers many advantages over other filtration efficiency tests. It has been used with little or no modification for years and provides a standard reference for comparison of filtration materials. The mean particle size can be tightly controlled and is sized using a six-stage viable-particle Andersen sampler, permitting stage-by-stage analysis. The BFE procedure is reproducible and provides a more severe challenge to most filtration devices than would be expected in normal use. Large numbers of material can be evaluated in a relatively short time.
BFE testing is commonly performed along with the Differential Pressure (Delta P) test.

Viral Filtration Efficiency ( VFE )
The Viral ( Droplets ) Filtration Efficiency (VFE) test follows the same procedure as BFE, except the challenge organism used is the Escherichia coli bacteriophage Phi X174 (ATCC® 13706B1™).
The test standard applied is ASTM F2101-14.
Challenge controls are maintained at 1,100-3,300 plaque-forming units (PFU) with a mean particle size (MPS) of 3.0 ± 0.3 µm. This allows filtration efficiencies to be reported up to ≥ 99.7%.
